To cleanse our ideas, we must first recognize that the thoughts that enter our minds do not happen by chance. The thoughts that enter our minds are the ones that we want; the others we discard. We are unaware that the mind might get clogged with junk. As it is, everything that we think about becomes an idea in the mind. If we talk about half of our ideas are good, then the other half are not so good. That's why it is important to catch every thought that enters our mind.
In order for our mind to be clear we need to catch all these random thoughts that come into it and note them down. Once we have caught all these thoughts, we can examine them calmly to see which one is useful and which one is not. Then we can let go of the useless ones.
This process of catching our thoughts and letting go of the unnecessary ones is called "mindfulness". The more we practice mindfulness, the better we will be at clearing our minds.
There are two ways we can practice mindfulness: consciously and unconsciously. When we are having a thought that is not helpful, we can simply notice it and let it go. This is called "being aware" or "conscious awareness". By becoming conscious of our thoughts, we are giving them space and time to pass away. This is how we purge our mind of negative thoughts.
Started reading spiritual literature This is basically about cleansing the mind since the majority of the concepts flying about in our minds are sheer junk that binds us to things and ways of doing that don't benefit us. There is also an instinctive method in which persons on the path to waking achieve this. It involves spending time alone, sometimes for years, with no clothes, no money, and no obligations other than to listen carefully and know the mind...
The simplest way I can put it is that if you want to lead a happy life, clean out your closet. If you want to be successful, take out the trash. If you want to find love, stop keeping people off-balance by being untrustworthy. The list goes on and on.
The point is that unless you are careful, the contents of your mind will rule your life. They will tell you what you think you should want, who you should want to be around, and even what you should want to eat.
When you start looking at the world through clear eyes, you see how many illusions we live under. Most people walk around with their minds full of clutter, believing all kinds of things about themselves and others. Some are bound by fear, while others are held back by guilt. Many believe that they are separate from everything else, when in fact, everything affects them.
