Coconut oil is a saturated fat found in the meat of the coconut fruit. It is known for its many health benefits and can be used in cooking or as a natural beauty treatment. It also has an intense fragrance that can be used to cook with or add flavor to foods.
There are two types of fats found in coconut oil: saturated and unsaturated. Saturated fats include seven-carbon chains and are found in meats, dairy products, and eggs. They increase blood cholesterol and body fat percentage and should make up less than 10% of your daily intake. Unsaturated fats include six-to-nine-carbon chains and are found in vegetables, fruits, nuts, and seeds. They do not increase blood cholesterol and are considered healthy. Coconut oil is mostly saturated fat, so it should make up no more than 7% of your daily calories intake.
The antibacterial qualities of coconut oil come from its high content of capric acid and its low content of omega-3 fats. Capric acid is an organic acid that is found in small amounts in some fruits and vegetables including coconuts.
Lauric acid accounts for around half of the fatty acids in coconut oil (7). When lauric acid is digested by your body, it produces a molecule known as monolaurin. Bacteria, viruses, and fungi can all be killed by lauric acid and monolaurin (8). Therefore, eating foods high in lauric acid such as coconuts should be beneficial for preventing infection.
Additionally, studies have shown that people who eat a lot of coconut products experience less inflammation in their bodies than those who don't (9). This may be due to the fact that coconut oil contains medium-chain saturated fats which are more easily absorbed by the body than long-chain saturated fats. The body uses these nutrients instead of storing them as fat cells.
Finally, research has shown that children who eat a lot of coconut products have lower rates of asthma and allergies than those who don't (10). This may be because coconut oil helps protect against atopy (allergy development), especially if it is used topically on skin infections or burns.
Coconut oil is made up of about 80% saturated fat. It is also low in cholesterol and contains other vitamins and minerals such as vitamin E, potassium, and magnesium.
Although there are many health benefits from eating coconut products, you should not eat too much of a good thing.
According to the research Coconut oil is a well-known antifungal. Although studies on its usage for yeast infections is limited, there is indication that this technique may be effective. A 2007 laboratory study discovered that coconut oil aided in the death of a variety of yeast. The researchers also found that it prevented the growth of new cells and inhibited the formation of fungal filaments.
Coconut water has the same chemical composition as coconut milk but does not contain any fat. It is made by pressing the meat of the coconut down until all that remains are the soft inner tissues known as "coconuts." Once pressed, the clear liquid inside the fruit is collected.
The high amount of potassium in coconut water may help control muscle spasms caused by anxiety or stress. Also, because potassium helps control blood pressure and maintains healthy nerves, muscles, and organs, we need it especially when we're under stress. Potassium supplements are always recommended for people who struggle with anxiety or depression.
Coconut water is very low in sodium and contains almost no carbohydrates. It is a perfect alternative to plain old H2O when you want to stay hydrated but don't want to drink anything boring like soda or juice.
There are several brands of coconut water on the market today, so look for ones that use natural ingredients without any additives or sugar fillers.
Coconut oil is high in saturated fatty acids, with short- and medium-chain fatty acids accounting for 70% of these fatty acids (Table 4). It is poor in unsaturated fatty acids, with insignificant n:6 and n:3 polyunsaturated fatty acid content and a low n:6/n:3 ratio (4). Coconut oil contains significant amounts of lauric acid, which is known to be toxic to bacteria, viruses, and fungi (5). Therefore, it should not be used on open wounds or cuts to prevent infection.
Omega-3 fatty acids are essential because the human body cannot make them. They play an important role in brain development and function, vision, immune system response, pain management, blood clotting, and more. Marine algae produce large quantities of omega-3 fatty acids, which are then converted into oxygen by fish. In addition, fish eat other organisms that contain high levels of omega-3 fatty acids (such as krill) and so they too can provide needed nutrients in times of famine or environmental change. Land animals such as cows, sheep, and goats also convert alpha-linolenic acid into omega-3 fatty acids using enzymes in their bodies; however, since they do not consume marine algae or fish, they must be given the nutrient in supplement form.
Omega-3 fatty acids can be obtained from plants, but only if they are consumed in sufficient quantity.
