Maintain a healthy weight. Being overweight increases your risk for chronic diseases such as heart disease, diabetes, and cancer. Being obese increases this risk even more so make sure to eat a balanced diet and exercise regularly. Aim to lose no more than 1-2 pounds per year.
Get sufficient sleep. Sleep is important for feeling refreshed and alert, maintaining healthy body functions, and preventing illness. Try for at least seven hours each night.
Exercise regularly. It's good for your mind and body. Exercise can help you feel happier, reduce stress, improve self-esteem, prevent illness, and live longer. Start small by doing something such as walking for 30 minutes daily or taking the stairs instead of the elevator. As you become fitter, you'll find it easier to exercise longer and harder tasks will seem easy.
Avoid smoking. Smoking increases your risk of developing illnesses such as lung cancer, COPD (chronic obstructive pulmonary disease), and heart disease. It also lowers your resistance to viruses such as the flu and pneumonia. If you already suffer from these conditions, smoking only makes them worse.
