Stage 5 lung development begins at 32 weeks and continues until your baby is born. The first real air sacs (alveoli) form in the last few weeks of pregnancy. As the lungs mature, more surfactant is generated. The lungs develop and enlarge in order for oxygen to enter the circulation.
